European Society of Anaesthesia (ESA) to największa organizacja zrzeszająca anestezjologów w Europie. Powstała w 2005 roku z połączenia Europejskiego Towarzystwa Anestezjologów (ESA), Europejskiej Akademii Anestezjologii (EAA) oraz Konfederacji Europejskich Narodowych Towarzystw Anestezjologii (CENSA).

Głównym celem ESA jest integracja środowiska anestezjologów na terenie naszego kontynentu. ESA dba o rozpowszechnienie standardów obowiązujących w anestezjologii, promuje edukację, rozwój naukowy i zawodowy w naszej specjalności, ułatwia też wymianę istotnych informacji pomiędzy członkami narodowych towarzystw anestezjologicznych. Ma więc bardzo istotny wpływ na kształtowanie naszej zawodowej rzeczywistości.

Coroczne kongresy ESA, organizowane pod nazwą Euroanaesthesia, mają niezwykłe walory edukacyjne. Liczba uczestników tych spotkań regularnie rośnie - po organizowanych w Stanach Zjednoczonych kongresach American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), jest to najważniejsze obecnie forum wymiany informacji w zakresie anestezjologii i intensywnej terapii na świecie.

Ponieważ jednym z głównych celów ESA jest integracja anestezjologów europejskich, organizacja ta jest w szczególny sposób zainteresowana krajami, które od niedawna stały się członkami Unii Europejskiej. Oferta pomocy kierowana jest zwłaszcza do młodych anestezjologów, którzy byliby zainteresowani dynamicznym rozwojem zawodowym lub naukowym. Należy podkreślić, że ESA to duża i wpływowa organizacja, dysponująca sporymi środkami finansowymi. Polscy anestezjolodzy rzadko korzystali dotąd z możliwości oferowanych przez ESA. Nadszedł czas, aby tę sytuację zmienić.

O ESA na pewno usłyszy też każdy anestezjolog, który będzie przygotowywał się do egzaminów specjalizacyjnych. Od jesieni 2008 roku część testowa państwowego egzaminu specjalizacyjnego w zakresie anestezjologii i intensywnej terapii stanowi równocześnie część I (testową) europejskiego egzaminu w zakresie anestezjologii i intensywnej terapii (European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care). Osoby zdające test w sesji jesiennej (w sesji wiosennej nie jest to możliwe) po uzyskaniu pozytywnej oceny Europejskiej Komisji Egzaminacyjnej będą mogły więc przystąpić do części ustnej egzaminu europejskiego.

Oficjalnym czasopismem ESA jest charakterystyczne "czerwone" czasopismo o nazwie European Journal of Anaesthesiology (EJA). Poziom merytoryczny pisma jest wysoki. Redakcja tego czasopisma jest niezwykle zainteresowana publikowaniem i promowaniem prac, pochodzących z obszaru "nowej" Europy. Czasopismo posiada znaczący wskaźnik oddziaływania (Impact Factor) i jest dobrze rozpoznawane na forum międzynarodowym. W chwili obecnej bardzo rzadko pojawiają się tam prace z Polski - a szkoda!

1.    ESA Research Grants Programme 2010
      (DEADLINE: Friday, 4 September 2009)
 
 
The research grants are intended to promote anaesthesia–related research in Europe, and to encourage anaesthesiologists to extend the frontiers of their practice or understanding. Priority will be given to topics that have no alternative sources of funding.
Applications are sought for the following:

• Project grants of up to € 60,000 each, to support work of up to two years duration.
• Research support grants for amounts up to € 15,000 to assist work in progress or pilot studies.

Applications are invited for the following fields:
1.     Clinical research
2.     Experimental research
3.     Patient safety
 
Applications must be submitted to research@euroanaesthesia.org no later than Friday 4 September 2009.
These grants will be awarded to start on or after 1 January 2010.

2.    ESA Fellowship Programme 2010
      (DEADLINE: Tuesday, 15 September 2009)
 
The ESA Fellowship Programme aims to select the best trainees and allow them to visit, for a period of 3 months training, the best training centres that Europe can offer.
Criteria have been established to allow us to identify the best and most promising trainees, and the centres which can offer the best of teaching and experience in Europe: with grants sufficient to cover living expenses and learning in these centres, the ESA seeks to mix together the two ingredients, for the primary benefit of the trainees.
The programme allows for six fellowships of up to € 10,000 each to be awarded in 2010, to cover travel, living expenses and accommodation, each for 3 months.
 
Applications must be received no later than Tuesday, 15 September 2009.
Applications from already awarded fellows will not be considered.

3.    Teaching Recognition Award of NASC
       (DEADLINE: 30 September 2009)

The purpose of this Award is to discover an individual with outstanding teaching skills.

The award winner will be required to give a total of 3 lectures. One lecture must be presented as a Refresher Course Lecture at the annual Euroanaesthesia congress. The other two lectures will be given on ESA satellite meetings of national societies. The award winner will receive a travel reimbursement for every lecture according to ESA policy. The rest of the travel expenses will be paid by the host departments or congress organisers, if necessary.

Applicants should not be older than 40 years of age. To qualify, applicants must be member of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA). Applicants must submit their Curriculum Vitae as well as an outline of their lecture. Each application must be accompanied by a letter from the applicant's Chairperson, and a letter of the President of the National Society outlining the teaching qualifications of the applicant.

One award is given for applicants from Eastern European countries and one award is given for applicants from Western European countries.

Uwaga! Należy pamiętać o tym, że od 2009 roku ESA membership opłacony podczas dokonywania rejestracji na kongres ESA nie uprawnia już do uzyskania zniżki w opłacie rejestracyjnej. Aby uzyskać zniżkę, trzeba zostać członkiem ESA do końca roku poprzedzającego kongres lub odnowić rejestrację z poprzedniego roku do końca stycznia tym roku, w którym odbywa się kongres (oryginalne informacje – poniżej).

 
Membership and congress registration split - don't forget to apply!

Starting with Euroanaesthesia 2009 the ESA wishes to offer its delegates the possibility to register online for the congress; for technical and administrative reasons, however, the membership registration and congress registration need to be split. For the online registration to the Euroanaesthesia meeting to work, the membership status of the registrant will need to be known in advance: the ESA membership registration cannot be combined any longer with the congress registration, mainly due to the different membership statuses. This way the reduced congress registration fee for an ESA member becomes a real benefit for the ESA members, but it is important that the registrant becomes an ESA member before registering to the congress.

Membership before registration!

To be entitled to the reduced ESA member fee when registering for the Euroanaesthesia meeting, it is important to be an ESA member for the next year (the year in which the congress takes place).

•    If you are not an ESA member in the year before the congress, you will be able to sign up for ESA membership for the year in which the congress takes place until 31 December of the year before the congress.
•    If you are already an ESA member in the year before the Congress takes place, and you want to renew your ESA membership, you will have time to do so until 31 January of the year in which the congress is organised.

Abstracts Submission

After submission, each blinded abstract will be judged by three reviewers.

Please ensure that your abstract, particularly any graphs, can be read easily, taking into consideration that the size of the original material submitted will be reduced for publication. The use of images, graphs or illustrations in colour are not allowed. Non-adherence to these submission guidelines may be cause for rejection of abstracts submitted. All abstracts must be written in English.

All abstracts must be submitted online.
The ESA does not accept submission of abstracts by postal mail, by fax or by e-mail.
We encourage you to send your abstracts well in advance to avoid a last minute rush !

Abstract submissions for Euroanaesthesia 2010 will be available from 1 November to 15 December 2009.
The deadline for abstract submissions is 15th December 2009 at 23:59 (Central European Time).
This abstract receipt deadline will remain firm and any abstracts received after the deadline will not be accepted.
